History:
IT ALL STARTED IN NIBELHEIM;
On May 3rd 1987 a beautiful baby girl was born to a couple who lived in the small town of Nibelheim. They named their daughter Tifa. She was a lovely and out-going child – her natural spontaneity and out-going nature always attracted people to her, setting her on the road of popularity and many friendships.
Tifa lived next door to the Strifes, who's son was a year older than her. His name was Cloud. Tifa never really paid much attention to the blonde-haired boy – she already had a lot of friends to keep herself occupied with and he mostly kept to himself.
When Tifa was 8 years old, her mother died – leaving her with confusion and hurt. That same day, Tifa ventured into the treacherous Mount Nibel – certain that she would find her mother at the other side.
Cloud, who had always longed to be part of Tifa's circle of friends, followed her with the intention of keeping her safe – but Tifa was unaware of his presence. As they crossed a wooden, rickety bridge the bridge gave way underneath them, sending them falling down a slope. Tifa's father eventually found them – Tifa was seriously injured and he instantly blamed the innocent blond-haired boy for leading Tifa into the mountains.
Five years later, Cloud and Tifa met up at the old well, in secret. Wanting to impress the pretty girl whose friendship he had always longed for, Cloud told her of his plans to join SOLDIER. He said that he was going to be like his idol, The Great Sephiroth. Tifa and Cloud made a promise then – Cloud would come save her if she was ever in trouble. He left in the Spring.
Afterwards, Tifa always kept her eye open for any article in newspaper that might mention Cloud's name, and she worried about him a lot. Whenever Shinra staff came to Nibelheim, she would inquire about Cloud – but no one ever had any news for her.
At the age of 15, Tifa started to work as a tour guide for people who wanted to visit the Nibel Mountains. She also started taking martial arts lessons from Zangan – a master martial arts fighter. Tifa was a natural, and she enjoyed the feeling of being able to fend for herself.
Tifa was hired to lead an expedition into the mountains. She was extremely excited because the group would include people from SOLDIER, and she had hoped that Cloud would be amongst them. She was very disappointed to find out that he wasn't – however, the expedition did include Sephiroth.
The group insected the malfunctioning Mako Reactor which was stationed in the Mountains. For reasons unknown to the people of Nibelheim, Sephiroth locks himself up in the Shinra mantion. A few days later, on October 1st, he sets the small town on fire, burning everything to the ground. That was the day that Tifa's life changed forever.
At the reactor, Tifa finds her father. He was dead – killed by Sephiroth's hand. Tifa declares her hatred for Shinra, and hurried into the reactor, determined to kill Sephiroth. But he disarmed her, and inflicted a fatal wound. She would have died had it not been for Zangan who took her to Midgar for treatment.
MIDGAR;
Once Tifa recovered, she started a new life in Midgar by joining the anti-Shinra group called AVALANCHE. The group was led by Barret Wallace, whom quickly became Tifa's friend. The headquarters of the group was stationed at the 7th Heaven Bar, Tifa being the proprietor and owner.
A few years later, Cloud re-enters her life. She persuaded him to join their rebel group, so that she could keep an eye on him, since she believed his behaviour to be somewhat strange.
AVALANCHE was responsible for blowing up Mako Reactors in Midgar. Shinra retaliated by destroying Sector 7 and blaming it on AVALANCHE. During this time, Tifa began struggling with her own feelings. Was it really the right thing to do by blowing up the reactors? They wanted to save the Planet, but was that the only reason she was participating? Or did she really just want to get back at Shinra for what they caused in Nibelheim?
After Sector 7 was destroyed, things spiraled out of control. Jessie, Biggs, Wedg and countless others – dear friends of Tifa and Barret, were all dead. Again, Tifa's life chang because of Shinra. On top of that, Aeris, a flower girl from the slums, whom Cloud had met earlier, gets captured and taken to the Shinra Headquarters. Cloud wants to rescue her, and AVALANCHE accompanies him on the rescue mission. They manage to rescue Aeris, but they find themselves tangled in a deeper mystery that they could ever have imagined. Sephiroth, who should have been dead, returned and murdered the president.
The groups sets out to find him, to settle the score for the planet and for Nibelheim. During their travels, the group meets Yuffie, Vincent, Cid and Cait Sith. After a very long time of searching for Sephiroth and trying to figure out his plans, they discover that he intends to destroy the planet by summoning Meteor – the ultimate black materia – for he wishes to gather all of Gaia's energy, and let it manifest in him.
Later, Cloud realizes that Aerith is the only one who can stop Sephiroth and his plans, but before Aerith ever tells the group how to defeat Meteor, Sephiroth kills her. For Tifa, it was incredibly hard to accept Aerith's death. The flower girl had become a dear friend, and her death was a terrible loss. But, Tifa keeps her own grief locked up, and rather focuses her energy on helping Cloud work through his feelings of hurt and guilt.
Cloud discovers that he was the subject of Hojo's experimentations, and he believes that his entire life was a lie. After he fell into the lifestream, and the group finds him in Mideel, Tifa stays by his side. Cloud was the only family she had left, and she could not leave him behind. She cared for him while the others went ahead and continued their quest.
After the Ultima weapon's attack on Mideel, both Cloud and Tifa ends up in the lifestream. She helps him to piece back his memories, by relying on her own memories of Cloud.
Later the group discovers that Aerith's prayer for Holy, the ultimate white magic, had been answered. Cloud and the rest of Avalanche defeated Sephiroth in the Northern Cave just before the battle between Holy and Meteor.
LIFE AFTER AERITH;
After these events, Cloud and Tifa moved to Edge – the “new” Midgar. Tifa runs the rebuilt 7th Heaven and Cloud is a delivery boy. Marlene, Barret's daughter, and Denzel, an orphan boy, lives with them, and Tifa takes care of them.
Even though the battle against Sephiroth had been won, Cloud was still suffering with guilt and grief. It broke Tifa's heart to see her oldest friend so torn up. Eventually, he moves out and lives in Aerith's church, the place where he had met the flower girl.
Although Tifa also misses Aerith very much, she could not help but feel that Cloud was choosing to rather hold onto a memory, than continue his life with her.
Geostigma spreads among the people, and Cloud is one of the victims of the disease. Tifa worried herself sick about the blonde-haired man, as he left home trying to find a cure. She called him often, but he never answered his cellphone.
It was during this time that Cloud was confronted with three Sephiroth-remnants, who were searching for the rest of Jenova's cells. They wanted to bring Sephiroth back from the lifestream. Through the events that followed – the kidnapping of Denzel and Marlene – Tifa encouraged Cloud to go to their rescue, and leave his self-loathing and guilt behind.
Eventually, the remnants managed to let Sephiroth return, but Cloud defeated him – again. After the battle, Cloud was fatally wounded, but gets sent back to his body by Aerith and Zack.
Tifa was also involved in Dirge of Cerberus, where she and the other members of Avalanche helped Vincent to 'save the world' from the Omega Weapon. She still runs her bar in Edge, and cares for Marlene, Denzel, Shelke and Cloud.

Gnawing on her lower lip in worry, Tifa stared at the wooden door separating her from Cloud’s room. Instinctively, she knew that whatever it was that Rufus wanted, it was going to bring about a change in their lives. It was a common fact that the young president was trying to rebuild what his company had been responsible for destroying - and Tifa couldn’t shake the sinking feeling that Rufus was going to ask for Cloud’s assistance with some or other mission. Undoubtedly, it would entail something that was both dangerous and risky… And in the end, it would come down to the fact that Cloud was going to leave again.
No, she scolded herself, her grip tightened around the phone. What’s the use of stressing over this if I don’t have all the facts yet? But, the doubt was there. Nothing had ever stopped the blonde-haired warrior from leaving before – why would he hesitate now? Did nothing truly become better between them after that last battle? If anything, hadn’t they grown even farther apart?
But… could she really find it within herself to blame him for wanting to leave?
Before her thoughts had the chance to become too morbid, she heard a muffled movement coming from inside. Slowly, the door was opened and Cloud came into view, his hair still slightly damp and tangled from what must have been an early shower. And no matter how the raven-haired brunette tried to fight it, he still took her breath away. It was undeniable that she enjoyed the sight of him – he was, after all, a very attractive man. But deep down, she knew it was more than that. However, she quickly pushed all such thoughts firmly to the back of her mind, and returned his neutral greeting with her usual warm smile.
As Cloud took the phone and started his conversation with Rufus, Tifa took a few steps back to give him some privacy – though at the same time she found herself unable to completely walk away. No, she was far too anxious for that. Leaning back against the hallway wall, she fixed her brown eyes upon the blonde and watched him intently. His face retained its usual calm expression, but if one didn’t know him as long as Tifa has, you wouldn’t have been able to tell that he was wrestling with himself over whatever it was that Rufus was saying. The slightest pull of his mouth, the dip of his brows – it all confirmed Tifa’s earlier suspicions.
When Cloud looked over at her, his eyes meeting her own, she knew that he was coming to a decision.
"I'll do it. We're meeting up at Costa Del Sol right? Alright, I'll be there."
Tifa could feel her heart plummeting to the floor – hadn’t she known that he would leave? Hadn’t she known that eventually it would come to this again?
Then... if she’d known all this, tried to steel herself against the inevitable … why did it still hurt so much?
While Cloud placed the phone back on the hook, Tifa straightened, her body rigid and tense – preparing herself for the words that she knew was going to come. Her fingernails dug into her palms as she managed to raise her eyes to his face, waiting.
"Rufus needs my help. He wants me to protect his expedition team as they travel towards the Ancient City to find a new means of energy for the world to use. I..I've decided to go..."
Of course you have, Cloud…
Strange, how hearing him say it out loud wasn’t as hurtful as she’d imagined it would be. It was as if though it had become something tangible, something real, and once it took on those traits – she could handle it. Like she has always handled it. Tifa hated to worry about things – she was a horrible worrier, she needed something real to work with… to fix. If she had that, she could find the strength to pull herself through anything. She wouldn’t crumble because of this; she was a strong, independent woman and she could take care of herself – and everyone else around her as well.
Yet, that niggling little seed of selfishness still made itself known. She was a fighter – why couldn’t he ask for her help? Why did he always want to take the world upon his own shoulders? Tifa’s luminous eyes drifted to the floor, her heart pounding painfully in her chest as a thousand mixed emotions raced through her mind. How badly she wished to be his teammate again – the person he could trust, could come to for help and support. But, for a very long time, she hadn’t been that person for him. No one has.
Oh there was anger somewhere in there too alright – anger that he didn’t even discuss this plan of Rufus with her before he made his decision. Did he see her as an inconvenient part of his life that he couldn’t get away from soon enough? Why didn’t he want to include her in anything? And why was she still putting up with this?
The answer that involuntarily jumped to the front of her mind made her close her eyes in resignation. She loved him. As a friend, as a companion… but also as something more. Something that went deeper than anything she has ever felt towards anyone else. And because of that, she would never leave him. And she would wait… She would wait forever, if that’s what it took.
Eventually, a soft sigh escaped her lips. She became aware of the throbbing of her wound, and her gaze shifted to take in the blood that had run in rivulets down her arm. Her logical mind was telling her to go and clean it, but she felt as though her legs had turned to lead. It seemed so unimportant in their current situation - and she caught herself wondering if that's what her heart looked like on the inside... all ripped apart and bleeding.
She couldn’t walk away from him without a word, and for some reason she was also finding it quite difficult to slip into her usual gentle self and go along with Cloud’s decision.
No, she wouldn’t simply accept it. Not this time. The Forgotten City was a dangerous and mysterious place – and she wasn’t going to let Cloud go alone. A wry smile tugged at her lips. Of course, he wasn’t going to be alone, and she knew that he was perfectly capable of defending himself – but he was also her oldest friend, and even though things were a bit shaky between them, she wasn’t going to let him go off into danger when her help would very well be needed and appreciated.
“I am coming with you,” she murmured, barely audible even to her own ears. Then, as though her own words finally persuaded her, she fixed her gaze squarely upon Cloud’s mako-blue eyes. “I am coming with you,” she repeated firmly, turning so that she was facing him fully.
“You’ll need someone to watch your back, while you’re watching everyone else,” she continued lightly, nothing of her inner struggle showing through. “And I’m sure Rufus wouldn’t mind having an extra mercenary along for the job.”
With this, she nodded to herself, and turned to head down to the bar-section of 7th Heaven. “I’m going to make breakfast,” she stated, pausing as she looked back at him across her shoulder. “Would you like some coffee?”
How easily she fell into ‘bar-hostess mode’, she mused, her lips tipping into a smile. It made her feel at ease to have something to do, and not just stand around worrying about what his reaction was going to be.
“Come downstairs and we can talk about the details, okay?”
Such as what we'll be telling Marlene and Denzel...
